Lumbrical press
MCP flexion with IP extension against light resistance
Goal
Loads the intrinsic-plus pattern for strength without aggressive DIP flexion.
Motion taxonomy (reference)
Also called: tent position press
Muscles — interossei, lumbricals
Tendons — extensor hood mechanism
Bones / joints — DIP joints, MCP joints, PIP joints
Indexed benefits: activates lumbricals · improves MCP flexion with IP extension · supports hand balance
Common contexts: clawing patterns · hand posture control · intrinsic strengthening
Best for
- Intrinsic balance
- MCP control with IP extension
Default dose
8 reps • 5s hold • 2×/day
Equipment
Sponge or washcloth
Avoid when
- Acute boutonniere care without clearance
Measurement targets
- Hold seconds
- Pressure subjective scale
Setup
- Place a soft sponge or folded washcloth in the palm.
Steps
- 1Form tabletop/lumbrical-plus posture over the sponge.
- 2Press gently into the sponge while keeping PIPs extended.
- 3Relax fully between reps.

Phases 2, 3, 4
Higher load or coordination — scale range and speed.
Next best movements
Later phase or richer progression when you are ready.
Prerequisite / gentler lane
Same region and intent — usually earlier phase or lower risk.
